Over the course of this spring, I’ve noticed that going on walks has helped grow my appreciation for the nuances of the season. It’s got me thinking how business owners can take a time like the off-season or an unpredictable event like Covid-19 to slow down and grow their appreciation for their business, employees and customers.
What has been interesting to me is how this spring I’ve really noticed and appreciated every stage of the season. In the past I’ve often said we don’t really get a spring in Maine. We go straight from winter to summer with a little mud season. But this spring I’ve noticed that we do have a spring, and it’s beautiful! I’ve noticed the leaves blooming on the trees and the flowers blooming as well. Now the leaves are almost in full bloom and today I saw some amazing shades of green looking up at the different trees. Also, I’ve noticed how different flowers bloom at different times during the spring. During lock-down I’ve walked every day and enjoyed every minute of it.
I’ve been wondering how we can use this same principle, of slowing down and noticing what is right in front of us, in business. One thought I had was to consider taking a step back and really get to know our employees, customers, and vendors. Take the time to have meaningful conversations with the people you work with every day. I believe that we have the opportunity to really get to know and gain a greater appreciation of where we are today, our employees are today, and our vendors as well. Taking this small step and getting present with our people can have amazing results.
What steps to you take to grow your appreciation for your business?
