Don’t take the elevator!
Instead, take the stairs. Every hotel has them.
I came up with this idea by accident.
You see, I used to be out of shape and didn’t feel like exercising AT ALL when I was at my heaviest. But I knew I had to do something. I wasn’t really interested at that time in lugging my gym equipment around to test out hotel gyms. That would just be extra stuff to carry around.
One day, early in my Road Warrior travels, I checked in to a hotel like usual. But the elevator was taking too long. My room was on the 3rdfloor so I decided to walk. The “light went off” that day for me. I knew that I could get some exercise doing something that I did quite often; bringing my stuff up to my hotel room and out the next day USING THE STAIRS INSTEAD OF THE ELEVATOR.
What I’ve found is that stairs can be quite a workout. I’ve turned this into a game of sorts. I make 2 trips from the lobby to my room. Then I’ll go back for a bottle of water and sometimes make a 4th trip for tea. Or I’ll do a few “laps” walking the top floor, then down the stairs, across the lobby, then up the opposite stairs. If you’re lucky it’s a really big hotel and that alone can be quite a workout.
Since then, I have gotten back in shape by eating healthy (even when I’m traveling) and swimming regularly. As it’s not always easy to find a pool, my easy backup plan is walking. And yes, I still use the stairs.
So if you’re looking to lose weight (or stay in shape) then next time you’re staying in a hotel, take the stairs. Often. Just make sure you aren’t on the first floor.
