Does Multitasking Affect Your Goals?

Does Multitasking Affect Your Goals and Results?

I’ve been reading and hearing alot lately about how multitasking doesn’t work.  How our brains aren’t wired to do it.  How we can’t focus effectively on more than one thing at a time.  If you do a Google search of “does multitasking work” you can read many articles about how it does not.  Some examples I’ve personally experienced.

Multasking Does Not Work – Focus Does
  • It is impossible to listen to my wife and hear everything she is saying when there’s a football game on TV or if I’m looking at Social Media.
  • While legally using Bluetooth to make a “hands free” call in my car, I have totally missed my exit because I was engrossed in my call.
  • I’ve been on a conference call and received the “ding” indicating I received an email, glanced at the email, and missed the topic of a question that I was asked.

I know that I can’t multitask.  I also know there’s science that supports my theory.

I’ve found that when I am laser focused, my ability to achieve goals is far greater than when I am multitasking. In my coaching and consulting experience, the same has been true for many of my clients.

Most effective way to achieve your goals

One strategy I recommend that I learned over 15 years ago from Franklin Covey that does work to achieve goals is:

  1. Write down things you want to be, do and have
  2. Prioritize your goals as to what is most important
  3. Create tasks to achieve these goals
  4. Organize your tasks around your most important goals

Once you’ve chosen a task to focus on, then get laser focused on the task or tasks that will move you toward your goal. Block out any outside distractions and go for it!
